Fleet Safety: Road Rage

Imagine this:  You get in your car, put your seat belt on, put the car in “drive,” and head to work.  Someone cuts you off in traffic and you become a whole different person – and likely not a version that you’re proud of.

If this has happened to you, you may be experiencing road rage.

Road rage is defined as “aggressive or violent behavior stemming from a driver’s uncontrolled anger at the actions of another motorist.”  Road rage is very dangerous to yourself and other drivers or pedestrians near you.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this behavior has grown to become the No. 1 traffic threat on the road. Road rage could potentially result in physical harm, legal cost, or even death.

Driving a company vehicle is within the daily role of millions of employees.  Supervisors need to be cautious when sending an employee out in the field and understand that they are representing the company.

Before sending an employee on the road, you should verify that they do not engage in any of the following aggressive driving behaviors:

  1. Tailgating
  2. Cutting others off
  3. Not using turn signals
  4. Mentally or verbally cursing other drivers
  5. Running red lights or stop signs
  6. Speeding
  7. Honking
  8. Flashing headlights
  9. Brake checking

Employers should educate their drivers on the necessary steps to make sure it does not escalate to road rage.  If people always behaved as if they were driving, the wouldn’t be a very safe or friendly place.
