Summer Safety Tips

“Summer is a great time to travel and enjoy the great outdoors, but it’s important to take simple, common-sense precautions,” said Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Principal Deputy Director Anne Schuchat, M.D.

With summer fully underway, families are busy with barbecues, parades, and water activities. These festivities result in plenty of emergency room visits, especially during July.

Here are simple summer safety tips to help keep you and your loved ones healthy and safe.”

Stay Hydrated

  • Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Rehydrate with water or an electrolyte solution to prevent excess fluid loss.
  • Avoid alcohol – Alcohol causes dehydration.

Stay Protected

  • Sunglasses and a hat can provide extra coverage.
  • Apply sunscreen after two hours of sun exposure.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to help cool your body.
  • Use umbrellas, and covered picnic table areas to reduce sun exposure.

Swim Safely

  • Learn how to swim – If you or your children do not know how to swim, take swimming lessons to stay safe in the water.
  • Wear a life jacket – Wearing a personal flotation device could mean the difference between life and death in rough waters.
  • Be alert and use caution – Pay attention to the weather forecast and water conditions.
  • Never go alone – Set up check-ins and the time or date you expect to return.

Prevent Fire Hazards

  • Never grill indoors.
  • Don’t leave your grill unattended.
  • Never touch fireworks
  • Stand back from the bonfire.
  • Never go near a firework after it has been lit.
  • Only one sparkler at a time.
  • Wear gloves when holding a sparkler.
  • Keep pets & children a safe distance away from the grill.

Avoid Food Poisoning

  • Keep meat, poultry, and seafood refrigerated until ready to grill.
  • Wash your hands with soap before and after handling raw meat, poultry, and seafood.
  • Use a food thermometer to ensure it is cooked to a safe temperature.
  • Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours of cooking.
